Practicing The One-Anothers


When Jesus was asked the question about the greatest commandment, Jesus said to love God and to love people. Matthew 22:37-29 says, “Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself ‘ (emphasis mine). I would like to take the time to look at the second command: Love your neighbor as yourself.

There is no specific Scripture that says, “Thou shalt love thy neighbor in this way…” However, the Bible is filled with many Scriptures that speak concerning the relationship between believers. These commands are known as “The One-Anothers.” Throughout the New Testament, there are 35+ one-anothers.

Here is a list of the 35+ One-Anothers:

  1. Love one another with brotherly affection (Rom. 12:10)

  2. Outdo one another in showing honor (Rom. 12:10)

  3. Live in harmony with one another (Rom. 12:16)

  4. Judge not and build up one another (Rom. 14:13, 19)

  5. Welcome one another (Rom. 15:7)

  6. Instruct one another (Rom. 15:14)

  7. Sue not one another (1 Cor. 6:7)

  8. Care for one another (1 Cor. 12:25)

  9. Provoke not and envy not one another (Gal. 5:26)

  10. Speak truthfully to one another (Eph. 4:15; 4:25; 5:19)

  11. Be kind to one another (Eph. 4:32)

  12. Be submissive to one another (Eph. 5:21)

  13. Regard one another (Phil. 2:3; 1 Cor. 10:24)

  14. Lie not to one another (Col. 3:9)

  15. Bear with one another (Eph. 4:2; Col. 3:13)

  16. Teach and admonish one another (Col. 3:16)

  17. Love one another (1 Thess. 3:12)

  18. Encourage one another (1 Thess. 4:18)

  19. Encourage and build up one another (1 Thess. 5:11)

  20. Peace with one another (1 Thess. 5:13)

  21. Seek good for one another (I Thess. 5:15)

  22. Pray for one another (1 Tim. 2:1)

  23. Stir up one another (Heb. 10:24)

  24. Speak not against one another (Jas. 4:11)

  25. Grumble not against one another (Jas. 5:9)

  26. Confess to one another (Jas. 5:16)

  27. Be hospitable to one another (1 Pt. 4:9)

  28. Serve one another (1 Pt. 4:10)

  29. Be humble toward one another (1 Pt. 5:5)

  30. Greet one another (1 Pt. 5:14)

  31. Fellowship with one another (1 Jn. 1:7)

  32. Deprive not one another (1 Cor. 7:5)

  33. Wait for one another (1 Cor. 11:33)

  34. Bear one another’s burdens (Gal. 6:2)

  35. Forgive one another (Eph. 4:32; Col. 3:13)

  36. Agree with one another to promote unity (1 Cor. 1:9)

If believers would commit themselves to following these one-anothers, I believe that we would see a radical change in the culture of our church! We are such a “me-centered” generation! It is time for the church to start acting more selfless rather than selfish. Let us show our love for God by showing our love for God’s people!
